Spread the word
-
It’s great that you want to help us spread the word about this idea - large scale is absolutely key to its success. But before you do so can we please: i) make a request ii) offer a piece of advice iii) provide some materials to help you present a consistent account of the initiative.
First the request: Please resist the temptation to send out an email to friends or worse an email list or post on social media. There will come a time for that, but not before we get the idea off the ground and build credibility. Let us explain why we ask this. Most academics worry about climate change, but because they have concluded there is little or nothing they can do about it, mention of the topic makes many of them feel powerless and depressed and therefore reticent to engage. This is entirely natural. But it means that if you put the idea in an email, or mention it causally in passing, you will probably find that however sympathetic you believe the person, or group of people to be, they won't give the idea the consideration you hope for. And once someone has decided they are not going to be involved it will be difficult to persuade them to change their mind.
Now the advice: We have found that people are most receptive when they are introduced to the idea by a trusted friend or colleague, and when they have time to discuss the idea. So while its critical for the success of the 1in5project to spread the word as widely as possible, we ask at this stage that you do it by talking to people one on one. We suggest that before you mention the idea that you check the person has 20mins to spare so they can hear you out. Perversely, one way to make people more open is to pre-warn them it is a bit of a crazy idea. Trust us its true. Now at this point many of you are likely recognising how you ended up here, a friend told you they wanted to talk about a "crazy idea". Well it worked on you, didn't it, so hopefully it will work again! Once you have introduced someone to the idea you can send them to this website where hopefully they (at the moment that’s you) can find all the information needed.
Finally here are (below) the materials providing a brief summary of the idea: Its as inclusive as possible, we have avoided including any specific examples of projects. Examples tend to have a negative impact. Lots of people have strong ideas about what is and what is not an appropriate response to climate change. If we include examples then its almost inevitable we will pick the wrong ones.
